I am always comforted by posts where people ask how to homeschool without a designated schoolroom or how to homeschool in a small house or a small space. Boy can I relate! Our house is just under 800 square feet so we don’t have a lot of extra space for pretty much anything.
So…how do we homeschool in a small space? Well, we homeschool in THE HOUSE. *grin*
Over the years we have posted items on the kitchen walls, living room walls, bedroom walls…basically anywhere we can find the needed room. Is this “fashionable”? Nope. But…we aren’t homeschooling to be “fashionable”. And quite honestly we enjoy sharing what we are doing with others and this just gives us another opportunity to do that.
Something someone said something quite awhile ago has stuck with me since ~ “in a small house…you work upward when using space…there simply isn’t any other space to use.” I really appreciated that concept because I don’t really tend to think that way. With that, we have bought the three drawer plastic things and stacked them on top of each other. Works really well (just make sure you hold on to the top one when pulling out a drawer or it might slip off!). Not perfect but works for what we need.
We do school on the computer, on the laptop, in the living room, in the bedrooms, in the kitchen. We do school inside, we do school outside. We do school in the van. Youngest and I try to keep things quiet at times when oldest really needs to concentrate. Easy? Nope. But it works!
Is it easy? Nope…but that is like most things in a small house. But that is okay! We know this is what we are supposed to be doing so we are working with what we have! We are thankful for the opportunity to homeschool and are working with the challenges we have been presented which is helping us to become better people.
So…can you homeschool in small spaces? ABSOLUTELY! It is just going to take some extra creativity (which I don’t have but the Lord is working on!). Now…go…be creative and have fun homeschooling!
