Homeschool Piano Review

As a crew member of the TOS Schoolhouse Review Crew, we had the opportunity to review HomeSchoolPiano which is an online piano lessons program made to be used by anyone of any age! We were provided and reviewed HomeSchoolPiano – Complete Set of Books.

There are four different books available:

CorePiano = absolute beginner. Consists of 33 different lessons ranging in video time of a couple minutes to above fifteen minutes.
Book 1 = beginner, maybe brushing the dust off and coming back to piano. Consists of six units. Each unit has seven lessons; three of those lessons have review quizzes.
Book 2 = beginner to intermediate (starts incorporating more complicated concepts, songs and improvisation ideas)
Book 3 = intermediate (toward the end of this book we are getting into concepts like syncopation, voice leading and more advanced scales for improvisation)

HomeSchoolPiano follows a 6-step cycle to help students to master their piano playing, these are done in the same order for each lesson in each book:

  1. technique
  2. rhythm
  3. ear training
  4. reading music
  5. song
  6. improvisation

How did we use this?

We pulled HomeSchoolPiano up on our laptop and placed it near our keyboard. Our house is pretty small so we don’t keep the keyboard out all the time.

P, J and I all started with “CorePiano”. I had several years of piano lessons when I was a young child but I really don’t remember much. P has not had any real musical instrument training and J has taken a couple years of guitar lessons. So, I thought the best place to start would be the beginning.

J was quickly ready to move on to Book 1. CorePiano was extremely easy for me and I went through it pretty quickly. I LOVED how much I learned in this book! P was a bit slower progressing through but found it very easy to learn and go through it.

Along with the online lessons, there is a pdf copy of the books Willie uses with each lesson that you can print if you would like. I did choose to print them so we could use them for practice sessions. Because of the way they are made they do not use up a lot of ink. (Praise the Lord!)

What is our opinion of it?

One of the things I really appreciated about this program is that it is VERY SIMPLE. You know exactly where to go and what to click on…you don’t get lost in a bunch of fancy computer program stuff.

We LOVE this program! It is VERY EASY to understand and done in an extremely professional manner. Willie (the owner and the one in the videos) shares things simply and even has some appropriate giggle moments.

I do have to admit that my super fidgety six year old got bored easily if the videos were more talking than playing but overall he enjoyed it and was able to pay attention and learn.

How much does it cost?

You know this is always an important topic with our family…cost. There are two options with HomeSchoolPiano:

1. Success Package (One payment of $299)
Unlimited life-time access to HomeSchoolPiano along with all bonuses (downloads, jam tracks, sheet music) for up to 5 students

2. Payment Plan (Payments of $99.97 per month for three months):
Unlimited life-time access to HomeSchoolPiano along with all bonuses (downloads, jam tracks, sheet music) for up to 5 students

Now, I have something to say about this…my son’s guitar lessons cost $9 for 30 minute lessons once a week. That adds up to $468 per year for 26 hours of lessons. With that said, the price for HomeSchoolPiano is EXTREMELY REASONABLE! And…the price above is for up to FIVE students (not just one!). So, although you may “balk” at the price…in reality…it is a great deal!

We feel very blessed to have this lifetime membership and would definitely recommend it to others! If you are looking to teach your children / students piano, this is definitely a blessing! Not only is it decently priced…but you also don’t have to spend additional money on gas or additional time driving. BONUS!

I was really impressed with how the videos are very detailed and visual. We are working in the core piano. I liked how he showed the correct posture and correct finger and hand placement. I like that I don’t’ have to spend the gas to go there. If we need watch the video over we can. I think the price is pretty reasonable too.
