2012 -2013 Curriculum

Can you relate with this picture? I can! In all honesty, I have a very difficult time figuring out what we will do in our homeschool…what will we study, what will we learn – and most of all – how I will “put it all together”. This is our third year homeschooling, next year will be our fourth, and so far we have been eclectic style (meaning we use a little bit of everything and kind of “piece it all together”). And quite honestly, our entire time homeschooling, I have felt very overwhelmed with the homeschooling choices out there. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not saying having all these choices is bad, I’m just saying – for a newbie it is hard to know what is best.

Well, after a significant amount of research – and some good amount of thought and prayer – I finally decided on a curriculum for next year. And – I have made a MAJOR switch – and although I am VERY EXCITED, I am also a bit nervous. I am praying it turns out as good as I think it will. Ever been there? {Please say yes!} Next year we will be using My Father’s World Ancient History and Literature for our then 10th Grader and I even went ahead and purchased the My Father’s World Preschool package for our ds4. We decided to use some of our tax return to purchase these items and I am SO VERY HAPPY (and a bit nervous, did I mention that?).

So, what’s new about this?

  • I have never purchased an entire curriculum package like this.
  • I have never purchased a full year of curriculum at one time. (Ok, there are a few things we still need, but this was the majority.)
  • I have never purchased the majority of our school year items NEW. (I am a big user of Homeschoolclassifieds.com and vegsource.com.)
  • I have never had the planning already done for us. (I.LOVE.THIS.!)

Why did I choose this curriculum?

  1. First and foremost, It is Biblically based.
  2. It is similar to Tapestry of Grace, but cheaper.
  3. It is “Charlotte Mason” style – which seems (hopefully!) to be how my son works.
  4. DS15 will be going in to 10th Grade and I just really felt it was important to have MAJOR focus on his schooling. I felt it was best to purchase something that was put together for high school by those more educated with homeschooling.
  5. I loved that the year is already planned for us, and that they have “talk time” between parent/teacher and student scheduled for every Friday. (I have felt like this has been missing so far in our schooling…it takes so much time to both plan our schedules and grade his work that I haven’t felt there is the time to TALK about what he’s learning…which I *really* want to do!).
  6. What it didn’t include was math, science and electives – all of which we have already found things we LOVE (Math-U-See and Apologia) – so we didn’t have to “worry” about “mixed curriculum”.

This was a MAJOR decision – and a lot of money. However, the more I thought about it I realized I probably spend this, or more, as I piece together our curriculum changing here and there as things weren’t working.

So, now my question – IS IT HERE YET? 🙂

I also decided to get the preschool package – because it is hands on and offers guidance for me, the inexperienced teacher of a preschooler. DS4 doesn’t like to color and his attention span is all of one second. So, I am hoping this will help me shift gears and start “thinking like a teacher”. We’ll see.

Lastly, why did I decided to order NOW – when we won’t even be using it until the fall? Several reasons: MFW is having a price increase March 1, they had a flat shipping rate thru the end of February, we used some of our tax money and I wanted to get what we needed before the money got spent on other things (you know how that is…) and finally, this will give me the summer to review and prepare.

Are you having a hard time deciding what curriculum to use? Or have you used the same one since you started? Have you purchased next years curriculum yet? Or when do you normally do that? I would love to hear from other homeschoolers about this!

Have a wonderfully blessed day!

I’ve heard excellent things about MFW. Can you believe it’ll be another year already!? (school-wise) I will stay with Ambleside Online until it no longer works for us- which I hope doesn’t happen 🙂 I do need a few books for both of my kids but I’ve been on the watch for good sales. So, pretty much we’re ready for next year:) and since there’s only 2 years different for my kids and the material is nonconsumable, I save my dd’s stuff for ds when he gets there.
I just noticed I’ve not visited your blog in quite awhile! It looks great!!
