Book Review & Giveaway ~ Two Books by Sandra McLeod Humphrey

I have two books that I had the opportunity to review:

They Stood Alone is a wonderful history / biography book about 25 men and women who made a difference.

It covers people like: Christopher Columbus, Harriet Tubman, Amelia Earhart and Neil Armstrong. The author says:

I chose my individuals (for this book) according to the following criteria:

  • They were people of vision who saw life from a different or a new perspective.
  • They were pioneers of a sort who were willing to question the conventional wisdom of their time.
  • They had the courage to step out away from the crowd and take a risk.
  • They believed in themselves and pursued their dreams in spite of societal opposition.
  • And their revolutionary breakthroughs changed their world and ours.

Each individual is covered in about 5-1/2 pages and the information is VERY THOROUGH! I REALLY LIKE the information presented. However, my only “complaint” about this book is that the times shown use CE instead of AD. Personally I had never seen this before so I had to ask my husband who told me this is the way of telling time without acknowledging Christ. I plan to have my oldest son read this, explaining the above – the remainder of the book is VERY GOOD.

Cost: You can get an autographed copy for $13.99.

The second book reviewed was If You Had to Choose, What Would You Do? This book is recommended for ages 8 – 12 and was penned in hopes that the information withing would help children know how to handle tough situations BEFORE they are actually in those situations. This book is meant to be a “spring board” for discussions about things like: honesty, being manipulated, cheating, teasing and more.

This is an EXCELLENT book for helping start discussion with your kids about difficult situations. It is written in a very easy-to-understand manner, had a little “cartoon picture” (in black and white) for each “lesson” along with about a two page story then several questions to think / talk about pertaining to that “lesson”.

Cost: You can get an autographed copy for $13.99.

She also has writing contests where FOUR winners are picked who get an autographed book and $50! She runs a new contest every three months! Check it out HERE.

I read the most recent blog post about Eleanor Roosevelt and learned that she was President Theodore Roosevelt’s niece. Had no idea! I also didn’t know she was extremely shy.

I learned that some teachers out there are using these books in their classrooms for lessons, and that is very encouraging! Kids need more moral teaching.
