Product Review & Giveaway ~ Tropical Traditions Coconut Oil & Homemade Salve

Photobucket

We had the opportunity to review Tropical Traditions Gold Label Virgin Coconut Oil. The only thing I’ve used coconut oil for up until now was homemade chocolate hard shell for ice cream (which is SUPER YUMMY!) but I wanted to make something different with it. So I took some time to do some investigation and finally decided I wanted to make this homemade salve. [I do understand that this is supposed to be an EXCELLENT substitute for different oils used in cooking…see below for more on that.]

In order to make it, you need beeswax, coconut oil and essential oil. So…off to find my items I went (well, I had the Tropical Traditions Gold Label Virgin Coconut Oil already…only needed to find the other two). Well, low and behold if a friend of ours up in Minnesota doesn’t have beeswax…and my husband and son were headed that way! (Could have only been the Lord!) So, they picked some up for me while they were there and brought it back home.

I then found out that one of my favorite places to order, Azure Standard, carries essential oils…this was then a no brainer! Got it ordered and picked it up Friday. Double WOOT!

Here is a picture of the beeswax and our scale…

Photobucket

So…here is the process I went through…I cut off and weighed 2 oz of beeswax and put in in a homemade double broiler. *giggle*

Photobucket

Then my “little helper” (with a cold, poor thing!) helped me scoop the coconut oil out of the container into the measuring cup…

Photobucket

Impatiently waiting for the beeswax to melt…almost melted!

Photobucket

Once melted it was removed from heat and added Coconut Oil…

Photobucket

Then essential oil (for fragrance)…[I don’t necessarily recommend this brand…it is just what I bought]…

Photobucket

waiting for the melting again (this time the coconut oil)…

Photobucket

Once it was done, I poured into a glass container (I was glad I had a funnel!)…

Photobucket

“Hardening”…I was surprised how fast it cooled!

Photobucket

It still has a little cooling to go, but basically the final product…

This was A LOT of fun and I am SO EXCITED to get to use our homemade salve!!! If this doesn’t sound of interest to you, you can check out some different recipes they have using coconut oil by clicking HERE.

This was a very interesting video about how they discovered and now continue to make this amazing coconut oil.

The only salve we have made had calendula petals and caused an awful allergic reaction in my daughter. This looks simpler.

I didn’t know coconut oil was high in antioxidants, or that heating could increase them! Love the long shelf life, too!

i learned It has been a staple cooking oil for thousands of years in tropical climates. As a cooking oil, its chemical structure is kept in tact and therefore is resistant to mutations of fatty acid chains even when used in higher cooking temperatures, unlike most vegetable oils
