I was provided a copy of The Shunning, which is a Hallmark Original Movie staring Danielle Panabaker & Sherry Stringfield, and is based off the book written by Beverly Lewis. Beverly Lewis, born in the heart of Pennsylvania Dutch country, is The New York Times bestselling author of more than eighty books. Her stories have been published in eleven languages worldwide. A keen interest in her mother’s Plain heritage has inspired Lewis to write many Amish-related novels, beginning with “The Shunning,” which has sold more than one million copies. In 2007, Lewis’ “The Brethren” was honored with a Christy Award. Lewis has been interviewed by both national and international media, including Time magazine, the Associated Press, and the BBC. Lewis lives with her husband, David, in Colorado.
The story is about a young girl who doesn’t really know who she is or where she belongs, even though she has a very loving family among the Amish. There is a lot of information shared about Amish life – and how different she is than what is expected of her (she likes to play the guitar and sing). As you might guess, she is shunned based on slightly considering leaving the Amish community – being shunned means no one is to talk to her, sit with her or even look at her – very harsh – but is supposed to “bring the person to repentance”.
So…thoughts on this movie: our family liked it. As a matter of fact, dh was so into it that there were several times I had to do things myself for ds3 that I had asked dh to do but he didn’t hear because he was so into the movie! 🙂 Overall we would recommend it to others, especially if you like movies about Amish life (but do keep in mind that this movie covers the first book of three in the “The Heritage of Lancaster County” book series).
This movie is not rated and is 88 minutes in length. When you watch it, remember to have a box of kleenex handy.
You can view a trailer of the movie HERE.

The plot sounds original (at least to me) and engaging. I haven’t read or watched anything Amish before, but using Rod & Staff Curriculum in previous homeschool years has piqued my interest.
