I have always been intrigued by the Amish. When I would make trips to visit my dad (as my parents were divorced) in Pennsylvania, I would *always* have to make a trip to “Amish Country”. As a horse lover especially, I always liked to see all the horses, and the buggies if possible. I liked to visit the “Amish Store” which sold “Amish made” goods. As I said, I’ve always been intrigued by the Amish. So, reviewing Amish Values for Your Family was without question…I wanna know! 🙂
Basically this book is broken into four sections which then have nine or ten two to three page “chapters” discussing different real life items (like: Little Boys and Eggs which is a story about remember kids will be kids and Workshop Raising which talks about the amazing blessing of working together / helping each other). The first thing in each “chapter” is an Amish Proverb, followed by a story that relates to the Amish way of life. Then there is “Roadmap: Getting There From Here” tries to help the reader see how they can make some simple changes in life to get a little less like “life now” and go more toward “life then” (aka SIMPLER). Each chapter then closes with “In their own words” which consists of two quotes from actual Amish about the preceding chapter.
I personally found this book very enjoyable – it was nice to sit down after a long day and read the stories and “go back in time” and remember that we too can enjoy some of that simplicity today. Now mind you, this book is NOT about “going Amish” but about how to incorporate their ideas of family, faith, helping others, simplicity of life, etc into our tragically hectic lives. There are SO MANY things I got from this book that helped me to remember where my focus needs to be, and helped “put my thinking cap on” for ways to simplify things or make them “more important” than simply surviving life. For example, one of the “chapters” is titled “The Girdle” which is about an Amish girl who feels she was overweight so she wanted a girdle. Her mother told her “no” so she asked her father who said she could get one, if she paid for it herself. So she quickly went off to purchase one, put it on and quickly decided that was NOT for her. 🙂 The point? Let our kids find out some things for themselves…we do NOT have to protect them from every little thing.
About the author:
Her interest in the Amish began with her grandfather, W.D. Benedict, who was raised Plain. She has many, many Plain relatives living in Franklin County, Pennsylvania, and travels back to Pennsylvania, as well as to Ohio, a couple of times each year for research.
Suzanne has a great admiration for the Plain people and believes they provide wonderful examples to the world. In both her fiction and non-fiction books, she has an underlying theme: You don’t have to “go Amish” to incorporate many of their principles–simplicity, living with less, appreciating nature, forgiving others more readily– into your life.
When Suzanne isn’t writing or bragging to her friends about her first new grandbaby (!), she is raising puppies for Guide Dogs for the Blind. To Suzanne’s way of thinking, you just can’t take life too seriously when a puppy is tearing through your house with someone’s underwear in its mouth.
