TOS Crew Review ~ Reading Kingdom

Photobucket

Reading Kingdom is recommended for ages 4 – 10 and teaches children to read to a third grade level. The program works on sequencing, motor skills, sounds, meaning, grammar and comprehension.

Cost is $19.99 per month or $199.99 for a year. Each additional child is $9.99 per month.

Dr. Marion Blank, the inventor of the Reading Kingdom, has been honored with the Upton Sinclair Award which is given to individuals who have made a significant contribution to education. Apparently her Phonics Plus Five program was the start and Reading Kingdom is an onlive “version” of that program.

Items covered: Introduction to Reading & Writing: Keyboard & Mouse Training, Skills Survey 1, Seeing Sequences, Letter Land. Once those are completed the student / child moves to: Reading & Writing Level 1, 2, 3, 4 & 5.

This is a review I was supposed to work through with ds3 but it was too frustrating for him, so I did the review myself.  He LOVED the music and the graphics but he was unable to make the choices fast enough for the program and he quickly became frustrated.

Here are some screen shots from the program:

This one is from “Letter Land” where the student is taught to recognize (by sight only) the different letters.

They get progressively more challenging…

In “Letter Land” the student also learns the keyboard, both by clicking on the letters in the screen below AND using the actual keyboard.  This is also done by sight only.

Once the student progresses to reading and writing, here are some of what they are asked to do.  In the below picture, they were being told, “This is kid, find kids”.  Then the student clicks on the correct (hopefully) item.

This is also part of reading and writing where the student is to pick which of the choices is appropriate for the word at the top.

Here they were first asked to pick the correct picture of “girls” then they were asked to type it.

There is an area for the parent / teacher to see where the student is and has been – they area looks like this:
